Night Fever, Night Fever, We Know How To Do It

Day 19

Blogging Tunes: Tosca shuffle on Spotify (grooving, and waiting for one particular tune to come up)

Just as I began this entry, breakfast arrived.  I'd already had a pop-tart, so I just ordered something simple: multi-grain flakes, peaches & cottage cheese (right, ma?) and.... Peet's coffee.  The latter being the only thing I really want right now.

So the food service person puts the tray down and I survey it quickly.  "Woah, where's the coffee?" (I hold up the receipt and show her the top entry -- intentionally not pictured here lest it become the blog preview picture.) She sees the coffee entry.  She also sees my DOB as that's written all over everything around here.  So she walks out to the hall where the rest of her delivery trays are sitting in the cart, grabs a coffee off someone else's tray -- don't worry, they're all sealed/protected -- and brings it to me.  Now that's service!

Avid jgwkia readers are no-doubt following Fever-gate.  Or should we call it Neupogen-gate.  Per last entry, I've been getting fevers every night and we think they are a reaction to the (daily, required) Neupogen shots which I usually get between 5pm and 6pm.

So yesterday my team and I discussed options for trying to prove/disprove this hypothesis.  Their first suggestion was to do the shot at noon.  That was a non-starter since Heather was scheduled to visit.  No way I was gonna risk spiking a fever and derailing that visit.  Second suggestion was 9pm.  OK, better, but did I really want to deal with spiking a fever at 11:30p?

Well, that's exactly what happened.  Got the shot at 9pm and at 11:30, I had a 38.3 fever -- 38.1 is the threshold.  So I think that proves our theory.  We'll see what the team says today.

OK, on to Heather's visit!  Earlier in the day, she and I FaceTime'd and I took her through what I needed to create a nice minimal keyboard setup here.  Here's the final result:

I call this my "Mexico rig" -- the first two years H and I went to Phish Riviera Maya (sans kids!) I brought a very similar rig.  Simple controller, USB powered from the MacBook plus GarageBand as the synth.  Headphones out from the MacBook can go into the AUX in of the Bose speaker.  The action on the Nektar sucks, but it'll work for the next couple o' weeks.  Thanks, honey!

The prep for this was non-trivial.  I spent some time with one of the nurses figuring out how we were going create the additional space in this (admittedly cramped) room.  We took out one piece of unnecessary furniture, positioned the food tray in its place, moved/angled the bed a little, and did a couple other minor tweaks.  That opened up this space:

I wanted to show this pic first, but then it would have been the preview pic on the blog.  🙃

So I'm hoping that playing a bit every day (along with the laps) is really going to help me through the next couple weeks here.  My right-middle finger is still a little sore and hurts when I make a fist

I'll keep y'all updated on fever-gate in the coming days.

So Giants fans... do you want to play LAD or STL?

iwkia...a.

  1. Love the keyboard setup. I'm not much of a baseball fan, but it sucks when both teams are from the same state, so GO STL.

  2. I never asked you whether you liked the Foo Fighters, there my favorite band. Since your Phillies are done you could adopt the Red Sox as your playoff team.

    1. Not a Foo Fighters fan in the least. Not really *rooting* for anyone in the MLB playoffs... just hoping for good series. Only team I want to see lose ASAP is the Braves. I guess I'd be happy for the Brew Crew if they won. I have lots of friends that are Sox fans, so I guess that's fine too.

  3. Love that you have the Mexico rig -- good teamwork J, H, and UCSF! And thank goodness the food service person got you your coffee yesterday because it would have been an insult to go without on your birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎂

  4. Only you would get such a sweet setup in your room! I could never muster enough energy to play music in the hospital. Your spirit is amazing.
